Gesualdo's later madrigals, from Books IV and V, have shared in their composer's notoriety. Their difficulty for singers stems from the enharmonic notation, and the inconsistent barring of most modern editions. Our edition uses the viol player's familiar 4-2 notation; the text is provided in all of the parts to assist in phrasing. These pieces, while challenging, are ideal for performance by combinations of viols and voices, where one discipline supports and clarifies the other. Edition includes text underlay in score and parts; choice of viol and/ or vocal clefs for the inner parts.
