In 1599, Anthony Holborne (c.1545-1602) published Pavans, Galliards,Almains, and other short Aeirs both grave, and light, in five parts, for Viols, Violins, or other Musicall Winde Instruments through William Barley, the Asigne of Thomas Morley. Holborne was a very accomplished and well-known composer; in his publications he referred to himself as “servant to her most excellent Majestie” (Elizabeth I). Many of the pieces in this set of quintets are his own arrangements from previously published works for lute, bandora, or cittern. The more famous and more frequently played pieces tend to come toward the end of the publication, yet there are hidden gems throughout. In our edition the extra part is the Altus part (2nd part) is included in a version written up an octave for the comfort of treble players although many of the pieces fit comfortably on the descant recorder and therefore the original Altus part is more useful for these pieces.
