Rameau (1683-1764) was regarded as one of the most important French composers and music theorists of the 18th century. He was known as the dominant composer of French opera and, with Couperin, for his harpsichord compositions.

Les Matelots (The Sailors) is divided into five short movements: Premier Air des Matelots, Deuxième Air des Matelots, Rigaudons, L'Agaçante, and Tambourins.
