Eighteen madrigal settings of a single madrigal text by an Italian nobleman, Marc'Antonio Martinengo, on the story of Hero and Leander. Martinengo set the text himself in 4 voices, then arranged for Lelio Bertani, maestro di cappella of Brescia Cathedral, to set it also. He then commissioned 16 more settings by such composers as Marenzio, Ferrabosco I (the only one to use five voices), Gastoldi and Merulo. All sets include fifth part. Text underlay in score and parts.
