The Two- and Three-Part Inventions were composed by Bach partly, for the musical education of his eldest son, Wilhelm Friedeman. In this arrangement of the 3-part pieces ("Sinfonias") for treble, tenor and bass viol, the note values of all but one of the fourteen arrangements have been doubled to assist consort violists more accustomed to those encountered in 17th-century fantasias. However, these pieces will stretch the abilities of most players, with their long notes succeeded by short note passages, frequent chromatic themes, leaps, and notes covering the entire range of each instrument.
