Along with Vol. 1, this is "intended for amateur players who wish to have material that is challenging and, above all, fun to play – that is the only raison d’être.”
Charlton states in his foreword: “Much of the music ... has been, quite frankly, arranged, and makes no pretence of being authentic in 15th-18th-century terms. It includes some pieces that could never have been played by some of the suggested period instruments, and a few of the harmonisations are certainly not what is normally expected in Early Music.”
Both volumes (available here) begin with warm-up studies, followed by tunes ranging from the 15th to 19th centuries, by, amongst others, Josquin, Byrd, Frescobaldi and Sullivan.
Useful advice is given on instrumental usage: whole consorts of instruments, recorder consorts, broken and double consorts.
