Transcribed & edited by Gordon J Callon. Cavalli’s Sonate or Canzoni were published in Venice in 1656, with the instrumental pieces placed after the vocal music at the end of each part book. Gordon Callon in his very extensive and comprehensive preface tells us that these instrumental pieces represent a mid-point in the development of the Renaissance canzona and ricercar into the later Baroque sonata.
